Dr Hilary Blacklock is a Haematologist working at Middlemore Hospital and in private practice at the Mercy Specialist Centre.

Her other roles include:

Hilary did her undergraduate training at Otago University (MbChB) and moved to Auckland where she completed her specialist training (FRACP and FRCPA). She then went to London in 1980 where she spent a number of years doing clinical and laboratory research. She was appointed Senior Lecturer at the University of London and Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond St Hospital where she was director of the Bone Marrow Transplant programme.

She is actively involved in clinical care, teaching and clinical research with > 70 published papers.

Hilary’s special clinical interests and expertise include the management of patients with:

  • Anaemia of all causes
  • Iron related disorders
    • Iron deficiency
    • Iron overload syndromes including haemochromatosis
  • Auto-immune disorders and drug reactions affecting the blood
  • Myeloproliferative disorders including polycythaemia and thrombocythaemia
  • Disorders of the spleen
  • Malignant blood diseases including chronic leukaemia, multiple myeloma
  • Inherited blood diseases including haemoglobinopathies
  • Blood transfusion issues
  • Support care and advocacy of patients with blood disorders
  • Sports haematology
  • Bleeding disorders
